Choosing The Right Type Of Garage Door For Your Needs

Posted on: 9 June 2020

When designing a garage or replacing a garage door there are several choices available, and the right choice is dependent on a range of factors including budget, internal space and frequency of use. In addition to choosing a door type, you'll be able to customise your garage door to some degree, so consider colour options, insulation material, finish and whether or not you'd like the door to have a window. Here's an overview of three popular garage door types.

Sectional

Sectional garage doors consist of panels that are linked together with hinges, and as the door opens each panel is rolled onto an internal track on the garage ceiling via wheels on both sides of the panels. Sectional doors are low-maintenance, complement modern home styles and can be held in a partially open position, as they are secured with high-tension springs. This can be useful if you work in your garage and want to allow air circulation into the garage whilst retaining some shade.

Roll-Up

Roll-up garage doors can be a cost-effective option, and they are ideal for small garages. Made with steel slats, these doors roll around a drum that is secured above the door, so internal ceiling space is not an issue. Some models can be held in a partially open position, but you won't be able to add windows to this type of door and unenclosed models can freeze in sub-zero temperatures. Nevertheless, this type of door is durable and will cope well with frequent use.

Side-Hinged

Side-hinged garage doors are typically made of galvanised steel, but some models are still available in traditional wood. The design consists of two door panels that swing open from the centre to each side of the garage and are a good choice when a garage has restricted headroom or when the ceiling space is used for something else, such as hanging bike racks. You can use the inside of the doors to increase storage space by attaching hooks or racks for hanging tools. This style of door complements homes with a classic style and can be opened manually or fitted with conversion arms to enable automated opening and closing.

These are just a few examples of popular garage door types that are each designed to meet different needs. When choosing a garage door, consult with an experienced contractor before making your final decision. They can assess your garage and the surrounding space, make recommendations that will meet your needs and offer a practical solution that works alongside the existing garage structure.
