You can install a security door at the front or back of your home. They come in configurations to suit all kinds of doorways, whether swinging or sliding. But it can get confusing when researching the options. To help, here are some basic choices.
Metalwork Doors
You need to consider whether you want security with a prominent metal design or an unobtrusive mesh. You may prefer a decorative model for the front door of your home. Not only can these add a picturesque accent, but they issue a warning to potential trespassers that you take security seriously.
You have two options to consider for metalwork security doors. One is an aluminium diamond grill style. These offer a cost-effective solution, and they come in a powder-coated colour range. However, if you want a powerful barrier, check whether the door has passed tests such as the knife-shear, the anti-jemmy and the impact test. These Australian Standards test how a door resists attempted break-ins. Ones that pass will have a label specifying the fact: AS 5039.
Another security variety with metal detailing is a steel door. The steel can be shaped into designs to give your home an ornamental look. You could opt for a style that mimics classic iron grillwork or else select a pattern of repeated rectangles for a modern look. The metal comes in a variety of colours. You could install a glossy black, red or bright blue door. Or choose a neutral matte white, cream or grey. The aluminium diamond grill and steel doors have a fly screen attached to keep bugs and leaves outside.
Mesh Doors
For a sleek, unobtrusive look, you could choose a mesh security door, available in a couple of styles. One is a woven steel mesh that looks like a simple fly screen but is almost impossible to cut through. You can install these doors at the back and front of the house, as they appear invisible. The mesh gives a tinted view past the door, allowing you to enjoy a garden view while being safe.
Another possibility is a perforated aluminium screen, created when holes are punched through a metal sheet. This process forms a tough mesh for front and back doors. These models can provide better security than traditional aluminium diamond grille doors. However, a door's strength depends on its specific makeup. Check to see whether the doors you're interested in have passed the relevant Australian Standards.
